After researching into the codes and conventions of a poster, we needed to look into channel 4’s advertisement posters to make our similar to that, focusing particularly on text, backgrounds font sizes etc..
From this images and a few more I have collected I can see that the font type is very basic, ‘’Calibri’’ or very similar to this. For the main its in a much larger size maybe 20, and the subheadings underneath are 16-14 font size. One thing I have noticed is the white box around the text, which alternates per colour text you choose i.e. black text white box. Or White text black box. I think this is a really effective way to present the text as it stands out a lot and cuts from the image, so it is large and clear to see.
In most of the posters i have added here as research, it simply has the date, time and a short slogan to interest the audience and give a bit of background to your documentary. This slogan should be used to engage with the audience and you want to make them want to watch your documentary.
In the majority of these posters, created by channel 4 it does not include the title ''Channel 4'' It simply has the logo which is easily recognisable as channel 4, particularly in our target audience channel 4 is a frequently watched channel.
To plan an image for our poster we wanted to use an image that could easily represent our documentary without questioning. Something that the audience would recognised and would relate it back to fortune telling.
We brainstormed ideas from our own knowledge of what types of things are involved in fortune telling, we thought of things like tarot cards, crystal balls, fortune cookies, horoscopes, and tealeaves.
When deciding what type of fortune telling we thought would best advertise our documentary well, we thought we would research into what our target audience would think, as to what they think what the most recognising type of fortune telling is.
We devised a question and went around to 20 young students, of our target age group.
The question was: What type of fortune telling would you use to best represent fortune telling?
These were the results:
As you can see the majority of our target audience said tarot cards, would be the best way to represent our documentary about Fortune telling. Therefore we decided to take a few photographs of tarot cards, in various ways and experimented to see if it was successfully.
However these images didn't turn out too successful because of the lighting therefore we improved this by taking another set.
Branded – This is where you include the channel name the documentary is shown on and who it’s by. From researching into channel 4 (which is the channel our documentary is being aired on) I found out that the official branded name is either ‘’Channel 4’’ or ‘’Channel Four television cooperation’’.
Grabs the audience’s attention- The poster is appealing to our audience, and stands out. For this we need a catchy slogan and bold contrasting colours that stand out well from each other. I feel our documentary does stand out because it’s basic; it has a main theme and a catchy slogan, which interests our audience to watch it.
Image clearly represents the documentary- Simply the image has to be related to the documentary itself.
Use some graphics – The graphics on our poster, is the black text boxes behind the titles, and other important information, i.e. slogan, time and date. I feel that this is a good way to present the titles, not only because it’s in the channel 4 identity guideline, however I feel it stands out against the black background, its eye-catching to our audience.
Has a main central image- This gives our audience a visual idea of what the documentary is about. In our documentary, we have tarot cards, and from audience research we have found out that tarot cards would be the most recognisable image to represent our documentary about fortune telling the strongest.
Limited use of words- This means get all the information you need, into the simplest way so its straightforward and tells our audience the important facts.Title, Date, Time, and Slogan. Our slogan for our poster is very catchy however short too, so it doesn’t take up too much of the poster and it works in the way which a slogan does. Engages the audience and interests them more about the documentary. Our slogan is ‘’The unfortunate truth about fortune telling’’
Channel logo is used – This is to clearly show what channel the documentary is being shown on, in our case on channel 4. Using a logo is much more effective than writing channel 4 because everyone recognises the logo and know what’s channel it stands for. Also it wont be difficult for our target audience, because we are looking at a younger age group, who watch channel 4 regularly, it would appeal to them.
Time and date is shown – On our poster we have clearly stated the time and date of when it is being aired, to fit under the guidelines of the Channel 4 Identity Style guide that we researched into.
Here is the production process through screen grabs in how we created our poster advertisement on Adobe Photo shop.
