Filming Diary

Throughout the filming we stuck to an organised timetable of the days we were filming, where and when.
As we filmed we made notes and took few images of our journey of filming, and problems we may have come across and overcame during this period.

We decided two weeks to film was a substantial amount to get all the interviews and as many cutaways as possible, sticking to our storyboard but also including other related themes that could be used if there was a problem in the editing process.

BLACKPOOL - We went to Blackpool on the 3rd of November and all decided to meet up at the train station at 10.30 ensuring we get to Blackpool at approx 11.30 am giving us enough time to get as much filming we can. Planning our time to visit different fortune booths and get one interview with a fortune teller.
When we arrived at Blackpool we went straight to the first fortune teller, however due to confidentiality she wouldn't let us film someone else, or ourselves being filmed whilst reading our fortunes. However she did allow us to have an interview with her and ask her the questions that were planned on the interview sheets. After we had an interview we asked permission to walk around the booth and collect cutaways and still images of posters and signs outside of the fortune booth. We also got a few shots of inside the fortune teller booth which was an advantage so we could base off our planned tea leaves interview at home, using similar mise en scenes.

We then walked around Blackpool, to see if we could find the back alley fortune tellers that we had seen on the Internet. Due to extortionate prices we were unable to afford a psychic reading therefore the fortune tellers wouldn't let us film, or take still images for cutaways because we were not ''paying customers''.

We eventually explored the pier and found a very spectacular eye catching fortune teller booth with various of posters and advertisements outside of it, fortunately involving celebrities and idols that have had their fortunes read here before. We began to film most of our footage on the pier, involving different types of shots, for example pan, crab, zoom and some still shots.
Here are some still images we captured when we were filming. Some of these shots were also use for research into the mise en scene of our Tea leaves interview.

TEA LEAVES When filming our tea leaves interview we planned to get together at my house, where our family friend who we were interviewing was at my house. Here we set up the mise en scene together, including red table cloth, candles and images for the background.
We filmed the interview however had trouble with our microphone, because when our interviewee used hand gestures the microphone would go all clustered and echo, muffling the sound. However after we did a few takes of the interview, less hand gestures were used and we got a perfect clear sound for our interview.

Not only did we film the tea leave interview, but we film cutaways that were planned to go in the tea leave interview. These cutaways are on our interview story boards, including shots of tea, tea cups. We also got a few extra shots of burning candles, and an out of focus shot of the mise en scene which was a good shot to set the scene of the interview.
Here are some still shots of the mise en scene we created before filming. The research of this mise en scene is on my blog and the inspiration of colours and themes, is research from when we went to Blackpool to film.

SUPERNATURAL EXPERIENCE
When filming our supernatural experience's it was really inconvenient time, and we did felt rushed because we couldn't really find a big opportunity where the people  we were interviewing was free all at the same time, so its easier to bring them together instead of visiting separate houses etc...
Therefore this interview i do feel is a bit rushed. We didn't really have time to set up a background of a mise en scene, so we decided if we put it against a white neutral background, we could possibly green screen it if we have the opportunity, or just keep it a balanced neutral background.

We interviewed one girl who we had trouble with hearing the interview, because as similar problems before she kept tapping her microphone with hand gestures which caused the sound to be muffled.
The second girl we interviewed we felt was a good successfully interview that we will use in our documentary. Even though this interview was very time consuming, and we filmed a lot of shots, it was still a really successfully interview, one of the best so far.

- Extra Cutaways
Here i went and took the camera home and film cutaways of relevant fortune telling related objects. I also then used some of our secondary research and filmed that for the history and background shots. Here i filmed shots on the Internet, of research and the media, close ups and pan shots of typing different things into good such as 'The supernatural' or 'Sleep paralysis'.
In addition i also collected magazines together and focused on filming the horoscopes and the ghost stories in within this. I did many shots during filming the magazines, and each shot varied from pan to crab shots, zoom in and zoom out. By getting extra cutaways shots it would be an advantage in our editing process when putting all of our filming together.
