BlackPool Pleasure Beach/Pier

For the main filming of our documentary, we were located in Blackpool.

We researched into Blackpool and its Pier, to see if there were any possible fortune teller booth, or portable Roma Gypsies booths that we could film for interviews and cutaways.
From research we found out that there were a few gypsies fortune booths that we eligible for us to visit and have an interview with.

From this information of research into where gypsy fortune tellers we decided black pool would be the best place to shoot interviews and cutaways. It has many amusement arcades which we can collect various cutaways, especially a fortune teller box which is something we are motivated to shoot.
Because there are many fortune teller booths, we could get a variety of different footage, so within our film we are not repeating our own footage, therefore giving our film variety and a range.

Story Boarding

In order to plan each shot for our documentary we needed to sketch it out in detail and explain a brief overview of each shot. This visually enables us to see how the documentary will flow, and makes our filming for our documentary more organised and planned.

SUPERNATURAL EXPERIENCE INTERVIEW
Here is our storyboard for the interview we planned with a local girl. It shows exactly the compositions and cutaways we are using for this interview.

Here is the story board for the tea leave interview which again includes all the cutaways we wanted to use within this interview.

Interview Questions

For our interviews we had to plan each interview with a series of questions.
In the fortune telling interview we wanted to gather the basics, and introduce a theme of fortune telling to our audience overall, understanding what it is and how its used (if our audience didn’t already know) ,
This is one of our interview in the documentary that will be present after the first 5 minutes.

Fortune Telling
How long have you been doing fortune telling for?
What type of fortune telling do you specialise in?
How do you get started and the history of how you got started?
How many people’s fortunes do you read daily?
What is your opinion of anyone becoming a fortune teller?
Have you read anyone’s fortune where you couldn’t tell them due to negative readings?
Are the majority of your clients satisfied with your readings?
Has anyone ever asked for their money back?
Can you interact with the dead?

Tea Leaves
Again in the tealeaves interview we wanted our audience to have a brief understanding, and with this we expected our audience to not know what tea leaves is, as it can be very rare, therefore this interview has to be the strongest.

When did you start to read tee leafs?
What is tea leafs?
How strongly do you believe in tea leafs?
Are there any other types of physic readings you can do?
How many people have you read tea leafs for?
What kind of things do you find out from tee leafs about a person?
Have you experienced any weird/unusual things present when reading tea leaves?

Tarot Card Readings

This is one of our interview in the documentary that will be present after the first 5 minutes.
Because in our documentary, tarot card readings come under a subtitle of fortune telling, we didn’t really have that many questions because it can all relate back to fortune telling and we didn’t want to repeat ourselves, so we had a few questions explaining what it is and how it works.

What is tarot card readings?
How are they similar to other fortune readings?
Can you tell us any weird experiences you have had when reading someone’s tarot cards?
How do tarot card readings work? The process in this?

Interview Planning: Tea Leaves Interview

The main nessicity in a docuemntry in the codes and conventions is to conduct interviews with serval different people, explaining and eplori ng their opinions, also could use interviews to be narratives when cut down.
Therefore we needed to plan each itnerview, who we will itnerview, the mise en scene involved, and each framing shot in the itnerviews.

Tea Leaves

For our interview about Tea leaves, we will need to obtain a microphone, tripod, video camera and a stills camera (takings pictures as evidence of our filming)
The lady we have contacted with is an old friend of a friend, who when we rang sound interested and willing to be interviewed in our documentary. After organising a date and time, we gave her a list of interview questions we were going to ask her so she is prepared in her answers; therefore we are not wasting any time.
The mise en scene for this interview will take place in her house. We have asked for it to be in front of a white wall with a table, where we can stick several of our images up as a background, creating a scheme and a general overview for our documentary. We are going to use a red table cloth and invest in many candles to create a similar setting from when we visited that fortune telling booth. Hopefully this mise en scene will create an eerie atmosphere and relate well to what we are discussing in the interview.
WE have asked her to dress in black, so it is a general outfit that can look quite professional, and it will also work well with our mise en scene. From this general everyday black costume it can also link to the
idea she is a home tea leave reader, therefore everyday outfit will look natural.
We then needed to plan an interview frame, planning questions we needto ask the intervwee in order to get aproparitae responses for our documentry.

Primary Research into fourtune telling booths and settings.

Here is an image we have taken inside the fourtune telling booth, There were many pictures similar to these realating to fourtune tellings around in the fourtune booth. Images similar to this may be considered when confirming the setting of our itnerview, and what we could do to make it relate to fourtune tellings.

We have used this image in our mise en scene for our tea leave interview.

Here is an establishing shot, of the fourtune booth and an idea of the theme of it. Alot of red and warm colours have been used (which is a colour that is popular when relating it to fourtune tellers). Also close up are small images of who has visted which can influence the public to get fourunes read, which links into the idea of the media being involved and making fourutne telling as popular with the public as it is.

This is one of the second fourue tellers we visted, here you can see another colour has been used but the sterotypical red colour is repeatdley used. Which from this primary research we can indicate the sterotypical colour, therfore could consider using this colour in our itnerview, combining it within the background. ie, red background or red table cloth.

Again here, there are alot of aversitsements outside the gypsy booth, which again can draw the public in suggesting how much the media have become involved with fourune tellings, ie celebrities.

Here is a small sign outside the first gypsy fourtune teller, which indicates what she can specialise in.Again you can see the colour red has been used.

Secondary Research into settings.
I looked around on the itnernet and gathered some images for our secondary research which gives us an idea of things to include in the setting of the mise en scene.

For this first iamge candels are involved, which makes the iamge more illuminating and creates a earee atmospehre to the iamge and the content of the iamge. In aiddtion we repeatley see the colour red involved when looking at gypsy fourutne tellers.

In the second image i found, focusing on the detail in the background the colour red is also invovled. I would like to maybe include a crystal ball into our itnerview, but it wouldnt relate to the topic of our interview in tea leaves. However i do think if we plan to do additonal itnerviews to maybe include the crystal ball.

This iamge is an image i found off the britney spears perfume adveert. Because it is involved in the media it is interesting to compare this to the primary research, and realisitc research we found. It is a good exmaple to show how much the media have become invovled that fourutne tellers are being advertise in un related things ie perfume.

However when i came across this iamge i wanted to focus on the candels, and i feel we should include candels into our mise en scene for definate, to create the steroptypical look. Also i feel it would create a realsditic atmospehre for our itnerview.

COSTUMES: (Secondary Research)

Gathering together a few images of gypsoy fourtune tellers we wanted to look at few possible costumes for our itnerviewee to wear. When looking at these iamges they wear alot of patterns, and bangles, rings and especially headscarfs. We did think it would be a good diea to recreat eon of these outfits, however after we visted the real gypsy fourtune teller in black pool she was just wearing black. From this we wanted to just have a blakc outfit, because it stands out from the setting and is very plain. We didnt want the costumes to look cheesy and fakke, and if we had a over the top costumes with bangles and scarfs, it could possibly look like we are trying to recreate an itnerview with a fourune teller in a booth, when really we are trying to show we interviewed a women  who belives she can read te aleaves from home, a raw fourtune teller.

For the MISE EN SCENE of our interview we gathered a few images together, of secondary iamges to include, sll theme around the supernatural, and most importantly focusing on fortune telling.

Running Order

In the planning process of our documentary we needed to produce a running order, explaining in detail each shot, what type of shot, what angle and how many seconds for. It also needs to involve how long each commercial break will occur for and when. This therefore gives us a plan to work off when editing and putting together out documentary in the editing suite.

SECONDARY RESEARCH

Ghosts

Here is an article we found off the BBC news website which
gives us information about how we would know if we were in a presence of a ghost. Because this article is wrote by a journalist even tough it can be very opinionated, a professional is writing it therefore our audience would be more likely to listen and consider these opinions. This article also gives locations of where it has been said to see evidence of the paranormal, which is in Hampton court. Here they recorded any unusual experiences ad footsteps, the results from this were high as participants recorded a higher number of unusual experiences.

We also came across these news article which as you can see tells us well known motorways where people have claimed to see Ghosts.  I think this would be appealing to our audience because the M6 is a well known motorway and i feel that our audience as a young age , will be able to relate because they have either been or drove on the M6 at maybe some point of their lives.

Fortune Telling

Horoscopes

We then found a website that you can interact with for free and get your fortunes read.
Here are a few images of the steps and what it told us.

We found the results to our answers were very generic. This is a good example of how the media has become involved with fortune telling and how easily it can be to influence the public, by creating sites like this where they can believe or not believe in fortune telling.

In our documentary we wanted to suggest the media was a big involvement within fortune telling and the supernatural. A good example of this is Horoscopes, which appear in newspapers, magazines, Internet, phone calls, and most of these have charges which are very unnecessary.

For our documentary we have the option to contain 30seconds or less, or archive footage for example things like, news reports, advertisements and radio advertisements. Because in our documentary it focuses on the theme of how much money fortune tellers make and the media behind it, the medias major influence in how it has become a growing trend and so popular to be involved in our everyday lives, an example of this is horoscopes. We thought by using archive footage we could give some good examples of advertisements and films that relate to fortune telling, and demonstrate visual evidence of the point we are trying to suggest in our documentary.

We wanted to include the Britney spears advert 'Radiance' in our documentary because it shows parts of a fortune teller. This archive footage would be a good piece of material to use in our documentary because it could show how much the media has become involved with advertising fortune tellers its in an advert completely irrelevant advertising perfume. Also by showing this footage it gives our audience good idea of the stereotypical perception of a fortune teller and how the media perceives them .

When looking into different types of archive footage to use we thought paranormal activity the film, using parts of the trailer or just small clips of the film could grab our audiences attention, because we are focusing overall on the supernatural. Using this clip could also show what types of things is coming up and what we will be focusing on further on in the documentary.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

Here are some statics we found from the questionnaires in the target audience research.

20 out of 30 said they believed in the Supernatural.
15 out of 30 said they would go and pay for a fortune telling
18 out of 30 said they read horoscopes and 12 of them said they believed they were true
15 out of 30 said they think fortune telling are true, and the other  15 said false.

Looking for additional secondary research myself and our group went to Warrington library and explored the Supernatural genre. We gathered information, biased and non biased from books, publicity and non fiction.

When we were exploring into the supernatural we read several books and popular name kept appearing. 'Sylvia Browne' She is a Psychic who has written many popular books and Internet websites.
When visiting one of the Internet sites we where shocked that it asked you straight away to join her ''Inner circle'' that is a membership that you have to pay for monthly.

We concluded that this women has claimed to be a Psychic by writing many knowledgeable books that the public begin to believe what she claims is true. This shows how easily influenced the general public can be by the Media, from websites and books.
